TOUCHLOCK ™ PC & DATA SECURITY SYSTEMIn today’s era of high tech communication, information is a valuable commodity, whose loss or theft can cause irreversible damage to a person, a company or enterprise. Whether that information is a new design concept, sales figures, client lists, health records, general accounting information or any information pertinent to the company, if obtained by the wrong people, can cause massive disruption, monetary loss and loss of confidence in a business of any size. Loss of information can occur through physical loss of a notebook, a theft of a computer, information theft by an employee, or an attack by a computer hacker possibly employed by a competitor. The financial repercussions of computer crime are extraordinary. A study by the US Senate’s Permanent Investigations Subcommittee estimated that banks and large corporations lost $800 million during 1995 from attacks on their computer systems and other studies indicated approximately 250,000 attacks on Pentagon computer systems. They concluded that large organisations did not realise they were victims before it was too late to uncover the crime. Furthermore, systems were reported to be vulnerable to fraudulent manipulation and contribute to the loss or theft of confidential data and other company assets if proper safeguards were not implemented. In an article in The Sunday Age on 8th February 1998, Coopers and Lybrand Director Richard Bratten states ‘illegal surveillance is a growing concern.’ Mr Bratten highlighted a case involving a contract cleaner with access to a high security area late at night, where surveillance cameras were installed after a company’s employees reported a number of minor thefts in the area. The cleaner was subsequently filmed attempting to get access to computer terminals and photocopying documents. For obvious reasons only minor percentages of theft incidences reach the news media. Companies depend on strong market confidence and stable stock market prices to run their businesses. The theft of information undermines that confidence. There is very little chance of knowing how much information has been stolen and where the information will end up. The sole objective of Touchlock is the prevention of theft and misuse of information from a Notebook, Laptop or Personal Computer. Once installed, TouchLock decreases the risk of unauthorized use of your information to minimal levels. Touchlock consists of a Pass-Thru Connector or "Dongle" which plugs directly into the parallel port allowing easy access to the Printer Port connection accessing the necessary voltage required to operate the Touchkey. A sensor pad is connected to the connector or "Dongle’ by a lead and attaches in a convenient location on the Notebook Computer. Each user has their own unique Touchkey which contains a serial numbered ROM, which cannot be duplicated. At "boot-up" time the user, when prompted, simply touches their Touchkey to the sensor device. The user is then asked to Enter their password which has been pre-set in the PC in encrypted format. Touchlock is currently being used by the following organisations :
